can bring me energy and power to my daily activities, whether
physical or mental.</span></span></div>

want to do well in my exam; focused thinking will help me to
concentrate on preparing for my exam.</span></span></div>

are five suggestions to help you with the process of focused thinking
and some of my practical example:</span></span></div>

distraction:</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">I
used to block off my time so that
there is no interruption. I would make myself “disappear”
or intentionally not connect with others. Lately,
I would even stop my mobile data after 9 pm to
prevent myself from using the internet.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">2. Make
time for focused thinking:</span></span></div>
<div style="border: none; orphans: 1; padding: 0in;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Once
you have a place to think, you need the time to think. My best
thinking time occurs in the night after 10 pm, before my
sleep. I stop my mobile data and don’t allow myself to look
at the phone from 10 pm. Put all non-productive matters
on hold so that I can create thinking time for myself.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">3. Keep
items of focus before you:</span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Concentration
is the secret of strength in politics, in war, in trade - in
short, in all management of human affairs. To benefit from
concentration, keep important items in front of you. I will
record my top three priority things to do every day in my phone
calendar. Also, I will ask my colleagues or family members to keep
reminding me on the important things to do by bringing the topic up
constantly.</span></span></div>

goals:</span></span></div>

mind will not focus until it has clear objectives. So, I believe
setting goals are important.</span></span></div>

few months ago, my goal was to complete my DNS D exam by
first weekend of October. This clear goal empowered me to get it
completed.</span></span></div>

your progress:</span></span></div>

2015, I started working as a Customer Care Officer in a new company, *MyPhysio,
which is a Physiotherapy centre. It is a totally different set-up compared to
my previous job. Before this, I worked at a telecommunication company in
customer service which requires me to receive calls regarding customers’
inquiries. Now, my responsibility is
mainly administration. I am required to arrange patients' appointments, I will
have to receive incoming calls and look into administrative matters. The most
important thing is that I need to talk to client face to face. Initially, it
was difficult for me because it requires me to speak in English, a language that
I seldom use in my daily life. I will become less confident if I need to speak
in English and it is more challenging when I need to speak in English face to
face with clients. After almost 5 months working here, I have grown more
confident to converse in English.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

experience at MyPhysio was a community event, Physio Day. My initial thought to
this event was I would not be able to have my usual rest on a Sunday as the
Physio Day was on a Sunday to cater to the needs of the community. However on
that day, when we finished the event at 2pm I felt a great sense of
satisfaction. It was worth seeing people that came feeling happy, satisfied and
enjoying the activities of that day. On that day, I was in charge of the
registration, and measuring the blood pressure and heart rate for everyone that
came. It was a day filled with new experiences for me.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

development training for us through leadership training classes. The class is held
twice a month. The training focuses on developing my Thinking skill. This has helped

in this new company. They are all therapists who are from different races and
religions but they are nice and helpful to me. My boss is a dedicated and a
patient person. She is not the person that will scold her staff directly. It
happened to me once when I made a mistake in arranging appointments for the
patients. Fortunately, the slot is not redundant. My boss talked to me and asked
me to explain the situation. Instead of scolding me, she gave me a solution so
that I will know how to handle the situation if it happens in future.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

with *MyPhysio. It has been a very interesting and pleasant journey with MyPhysio
this year. </span><span style="color: #1f497d; font-size: large; text-indent: 36pt;">This year, thanks to to
MyPhysio , I was given the opportunity to attend the World Conference Physical
Therapy (WCPT) 2015 at Singapore, May 2015. This is my first time attending
WCPT and it has been a great experience and exposure during the conference.
During the conference, I</span><span style="color: #1f497d; font-size: large; text-indent: 36pt;"> </span><span style="color: #1f497d; font-size: large; text-indent: 36pt;">got to meet and
share experiences with other physiotherapists from other countries. I hope to
get this opportunity again in the future.</span></div>

influenced by the Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization(DNS) approach and we
would like to get other physiotherapist in Malaysia to know and learn more
about the effectiveness of DNS. We started our year 2015 with a one day course which
introduced us to an understanding of a Developmental Kinesiology Approach. This
was my first time attending such a course. We learnt how to consider exercises
in developmental baby positions. This course was aimed to prepare us for the
future DNS courses that MyPhysio would be organizing. Although it is not my
first exposure to DNS, but there is always something new to learn and improve
my clinical skills.</span></div>

skill course at Melia Hotel for 5 days. I attended the DNS A course with other
colleagues. After the course, I found that I was able to understand more about the
principles of DNS and became more confident in applying this approach during
treatment sessions.</span><span style="color: #1f497d; font-size: large; text-indent: 36pt;"> </span><span style="color: #1f497d; font-size: large; text-indent: 36pt;">It made me want to
know more and improve more both in knowledge and skill.</span></div>

also gives us opportunities to improve our leadership skills. We have discussion
classes on the topic ‘Thinking For a Change’ since July 2015. There are 11
thinking skills that we can learn, practice and use to improve and change
ourselves to be a better person as a physiotherapist and human being
respectively.</span></div>

The aim of this training was to educate nurses and caregivers on basic proper movement care in transferring & helping patient for daily activities and to provide hands-on practical demonstration for carers to apply proper movement care in daily activities.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

It was very encouraging to have participants come from as far as Melaka for this 1 day community service training event. The training started around 9.30am with a brief explanation of the FiCoMo concept by Ms. Lim Yi Lin (consultant physiotherapy at MyPhysio FiCoMo). FiCoMo stands for “<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Fi</b>ve <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Co</b>res for <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mo</b>vement”, meaning <span style="font-size: medium;">we focus on 5 major cores of our body to be strong in a stabilization function in order to achieve the optimal network of system to move healthily.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></span></div>

We did a lot of demonstration and practical session practicing with each other on transfer techniques , proper handling skills and proper movement care principles for both patient & care giver. We adjusted and modified the techniques according to the patient’s need & environment based on the FiCoMo concept.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At the end of the training, there was practical examination for the nurses. They did their best during practical examination. The training ended around 3.30pm.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

Although a little nervous throughout the training, I was very happy and excited in having the opportunity to share my knowledge and help others. I also received new information and input from the participants’ feedback that was very useful and beneficial for me. This training also increased my confidence in my communication with others. All the participants are very committed to learn the proper movement care. They asked a lot of questions and they really wanted to do their best in taking care of their patients/family member. They were all very friendly and that helped us all enjoy the session while learning together.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2015 is a year of change for me. Firstly, i started my journey in MyPhysio in 2015. I took a leap in my career path, from being in a 'comfort zone' environment to a new environment. I am challenged to grow from my own level and everyone is different. It is an interesting journey as I have been challenged to explore that there are many ways in doing things, hence I have learnt that there can always be more than one option to achieve a goal. There isn't just one option in handling things as in there isn't only just one way to reach a destination. I have learnt to weigh out the options and choose the best option. It is important to think through things before an action is taken and as you spend more time in thinking through, the solutions seems to surface clearer. </span></div>

It is an achievement for me as the journey in learning DNS started a few years back. i have completed the courses and exams abroad in USA, Canada & Prague. As I apply DNS more in my practice, I learnt to look beyond the condition of the patient and more on the biopsychosocial aspect of the patient by holistic approach which is necessary in current medical field. I learn to see the connection and treat patient in a more functional way.It has been a great learning curve for me. I am very glad that i am able to use this approach to enhance my treatment skills and to give better quality treatment for my clients. I helped organised the first DNS course by MyPhysio this year. It was a success and very encouraging to see many physiotherapist being exposed to DNS.</span></div>

me- from an established private hospital to a private specialist physiotherapy
centre; from a senior junior hierarchy corporate world to a mentor mentee
relationship environment; obviously I prefer the latter. For me, a mentor has
the ability to influence the new junior to this upcoming industry for the
benefit of our patients who put their trust in us. Of course I have a very good
working environment, that's the reason I see myself growing. Within one year, I
have been groomed in and out, my mind-set (be it personal and professional), my
attitude and even my writing skill!</span></div>

knowledge or skills? That comes later. We believe, when you have a level 5 mind-set
(from a scale of 1 to 5), automatically the level of clinical knowledge or
skills will be elevated to the level of mind set. Of course we go for courses
to keep ourselves updated. A skilled/in depth mind set prepared me to look at
my patients as a person who comes from different walks of life rather than just
see the patient with the condition alone. If I were to just focus on the condition
alone, flip some pages to refresh my memory and all will go well to treat a
condition. But what challenged me was to be able to understand my patients with
their frame of mind and meet their expectations with my patient care
strategies. Providing my physiotherapy services to patients who now pay from
their own pockets (as majority of our patients do not claim from insurance or
companies) was a totally different situation compared with my last workplace. I
never realized this important element when I was in hospital setting. I thought
being a good physiotherapist was to make my patient feel pain free so they
could be discharged. I didn’t engage with my patients and I had less empathy
for my patients previously. Now, their recovery and their wellness have become
a part of who I am. Here, in MyPhysio I'm empowered to deal with expectations
instead of just conditions, isn't it magical? Indeed it is to me.</span></span></div>

Most of the time I won't feel the change in me till somebody tells me so,
that's influence. constantly I feel I take the initiative to change the way how I handle things,
which is an improvement for me. I can feel the changes in me, because it is my

PROGRESS personally from within me and not depending on external motivation.
The limitation of depending on external motivation from my surrounding for
personal Progress is that it tends to fade after a while and so I need to keep

speak faster than my mind thinking and processing time. In writing my thoughts,
I have to think, plan, process, and correct my ideas and words. These four
steps really made me slow down when the time came for me to express myself
regardless in writing or verbally. The context is important, how to present it
is important. Whether the context is understood or acceptable is important. All
these come from the four steps I mentioned above. Patience and detail are the
keys, I'm improving through these invisibly.</span></div>

physio, I always believed that there were 3 main roles a physiotherapist should
have in their thinking and actions. They are the roles as a Clinician, Educator
and Researcher to keep this profession on the road of PROGRESS. When I decided
to be a physiotherapist at 16 years old, I never looked back on this journey of
my passion and I am thankful for all the experiences (good and not so good) I learnt
from. I am especially grateful to the wonderful physios, patients and people
that taught me about life and the value of living….that reminded me to keep
overcoming the challenges with the vision and the passion.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

of relooking at many believes and thinking I had and have redefined many ideas

to travel abroad to the USA & Europe to be among the physios, chiros and
osteopaths to see how everyone of us had different ideas on the elements of
structure, movement and function. I began to integrate my understanding and
believes on being a MOVEMENT Specialist with the Bio-psychosocial Model of Well-Being.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

our Leadership Training class was on the topic of 'Big-picture Thinking' skill.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

If you asked me before I read the book- 'Thinking for a change' if I had
Big-picture Thinking...I would have answered Yes I DO. Previously I thought, as
long as I accommodate perspectives and needs of others in my choices...I
consider myself to be a big picture thinker. Further to that, I considered
myself to be a Big-picture thinker when I had the ability to see a situation in
a broader perspective for my family with reference to my professional
perspective which would add value in the relevant matters. This to me was good
for my family members; hence they should then follow my advice with my
professional point of view. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> But I now think my understanding of
Big-picture Thinking may not be completely true.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon".<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">This line gave me a
very big impact on the way I used to think; prior to this I understood the
language but not the meaning of the line. I should not see from my own
world/perspective when family members refuse to follow what I think is good for
them. I should not limit myself by other people's opinion when I believe in
what I see as best in a situation. People may choose to live in their horizons
but I will be courageous to continue to see my horizon with the good thinking
for my life and choices.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Learn continually,
listen intentionally, live completely and look expansively are the mindset which
should be adopted in the thinking process to achieve my horizon. From these, I
have far more to learn.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background: white;">During the discussion, we had to rate ourselves
from the scale of 1-10 as a big picture thinker. Initially my big picture
thinking is base on three different roles - me in my personal growth, me in my
career, and me in my family. With this way of thinking, hence I have different
ratings too! But big picture thinking is a skill; if it is a skill...it should
not differ when in different situations. It should have one rating and not
three! The mindset should be considered as a whole, it won't be totally different
even at different roles. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I used to view
challenges with a situational view of overcoming it. I found myself to be
impatient easily when challenges crossed my path in a situation then. However,
seeing another way of viewing my challenges, I have observed my new ability to
be able to overcome the negative emotions (impatience) when I implement
Big-picture thinking with a vision as a target, instead of just a good
situation as a target. This enables me to prepare myself to deal with my
challenges instead of trying to push it away.</span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br />
<span style="background: white;">The way I now think is...How free are you/me? If
I have limitations in my mind because of what others think and say (the
situation), then that will be the size of my thinking! - telling myself.</span><br />

<span style="background: white;">After attending the leadership class, I always
link my past to current. I begin to connect all the dots and I now believe I have
the potential to become a leader! I have never settled for certainty, I took up
the challenge to study physiotherapy when I was 26 years old. I gave myself
permission to expand my world; I put myself in an environment where the good
thinkers are. I learn from every experience and gain insight from a variety of people;
I try to understand what/why/how my seniors perform. I am not a leader YET to
others, as sometimes I still sway in between the reality and idealism. But I
have begun this journey by first beginning to lead myself from my dream and
choices instead of from my situations. My situations do not limit my thinking. I
have to unleash the potential of focused thinking to sharpen my thinking skill.
How? To be continue, thinking skill 2- unleash the potential of focused

Having good thinking can change your life. According to James Allen, “Good thoughts and action can never produce bad results; bad thought and actions can never produce good results.” To me the statement seems logical and there is truth in what James Allen stated. The question that follows this thought of mine is how do we define good thinking. According to John Maxwell there are only a minority of people who are good thinkers. During our discussion we talk about being good thinkers in different context. We must always strive to be in the minority group of good thinkers in whatever environment we may be in. There are many levels of depth of good thinking. It is important to know the WHYs as this will lead us to the HOW and WHAT in the process of reaching our goals and potential. People must learn how to think well to achieve their dreams and to reach their potential.</span></div>

As a leader, he had a vision of bringing up Singapore and making the country a landmark in the world map. He is able to see the details in the big picture and stay focus all the time, showing his consistency in striving to make his vision a reality. During our team discussion, one of our colleague mentioned that she viewed Tun Mahathir as a good thinker.To her, he was a great leader in bringing great development to the country and leading the country to the next level. Some of us also viewed P. Ramlee as a good thinker. We see him bringing great changes to the entertainment industry in our country. His legacy still stays on even though he has passed on many years. In our discussion, one of our colleague’s mentioned that she viewed her husband as a good thinker. She identified him as a good thinker. She came to this conclusion because …(I quote her) “He is able to think through details looking at the issue from many different angles. He is able to then set clear goals and work towards it consistently.” </span></div>

He related back to his time of graduation, his professors gave him some books informing him to only read those books after he begins working. They told him to only read the books when he had new questions during his work which he could not answer. After a few years of working the books were extremely useful and thinking back to what the professors said, he saw his professors to be good thinkers as they were able to empower him with direction and guidance for his career even though they were not near him now. Nelson was also mentioned to be respected as a good thinker. He was able to walk the talk from the beginning until the end. He was able to influence people even from prison and what he planted was so strong that it influenced others to make a change. He was a great influence of demonstrating and teaching to be forgiving.</span></div>

It depends on which context we are referring to. Good thinking isn’t just one thing. It consists of several specific thinking skills. Becoming a good thinker means developing those skills to the best of our ability. After our sharing of thoughts, we came to conclusion that good thinkers in the context of leadership are people who have good thinking skills whereby they are able to influence and lead people in any situation in a positive way. The concept of leadership thinking is that you are able to have a VISION, and with the concrete vision you will start to have a MISSION with VALUES and OBJECTIVES hence having GOALS to work towards to.</span></div>

It can be cultivated and refined. How are we to acquire good thinking skills? It starts with an intention of wanting to be a good thinker. It is discipline and consistency to acquire good thinking skills. It is important to put aside some time and find a place to think our thoughts; a place where we can shape our thoughts; stretch our thoughts; land our thoughts and finally fly our thoughts. </span></div>

This year’s world congress was held in Singapore from 1st-4th May 2015. WCPT will be holding congresses more frequently under plans designed to make this event more accessible to all the Confederation’s members. WCPT’s Executive Committee is making this announcement after two years of study. The Executive Committee believes that a two-year interval between congresses will enable today’s Confederation to better fulfill its objectives, serve its member organizations and move the profession forward globally. The next congress will be held in 2017 in Cape Town.</span></div>

That was the start of my exciting opportunity to quite a few FIRST TIME experiences for me. I would be going out of Malaysia for the 1st time, being in an aeroplane for the 1st time….and attending an international gathering of Physiotherapists (WCPT) for the 1st time! I recall…I was excited yet a little nervous as all these were such new experiences for me. I was glad Ms Lim (my boss) would be going along with me. I wanted to be as prepared as I could be for the WCPT, so after confirming the pre-conference workshop </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I would be attending, I discussed with Ms Lim & Ms Lee (my senior colleague) on the topics to read through before going.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The WCPT was held at Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore from the 1st - 5th of May. It was a good experience and exposure for me. The pre-course that I attended on the1stof May was located at Nanyang Polytechnic, in Ang Mo Kio Ave 8, Singapore. It was entitled: “Acute and Chronic Pain Management: Evidence-Based Role of Electrophysical Agents. There were four speakers who presented their researches and other current researchs regarding the topic. In this course, we got to know the latest evidence of all the electrophysical agents that we used to treat our patients. As I listened to them, I realised that they were talking from their very wide range of patient experiences and could tell us the benefits they saw with their patient outcomes. I remember thinking to myself that I would like to have the same opportunity like them in my own career journey and see my patients benefit from my treatment services.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On Saturday, I attended the conference that was located at Suntec Convention Centre. This convention centre is just two stations from my hotel and it is attached to the city hall shopping complex. During this conference, there were a lot of research presentations and talks on various topics.I managed to see research presentations on topics like stroke, musculoskeletal and falls among older people. There were also a lot of poster presentations and viewing. At the same area of poster viewing, there were also a lot of booths that showed the current technology and products for physical therapy. I must say…there really was just too much information for me to chew on in ONE day! I decided to take as much pictures and flyers related to my area of interest so that I could discuss these with my team in My Physio and learn together.</span><br />

It was an informative course and a very relevant topic for me. </span></div>

I noticed that a few of my patients’ pain symptoms hardly improved despite the recovery of their actual tissue injury or the elimination of the mechanism deficits.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Disproportionate pains, diffuse pain distribution, hypersensitivity to a certain sense are all indications of possibility of central sensitization. I am confident that I will be able to achieve a better outcome with this new understanding. I will now start to perform neurophysiological pain tests and conduct pain education classes for my patients.</span></div>
